Verslag Portugal

Mijn verwachtingen over Portugal waren voor de reis niet zo groot. Ik wist ook niet goed wat me te wachten stond maar na de reis was ik toch zeer blij dat ik toch ben meegegaan. Portugezen zijn een van de vriendelijkste en warmste mensen die ik ooit heb ontmoet.

Bom dia:

Deze woorden hoor je overal en altijd. Mensen groeten elkaar altijd als ze mekaar tegenkomen ook al kennen ze mekaar niet.

In het begin van de reis zat elk land apart maar dit was maar van korte duur. Door onder andere de ‘icebreakers’ en de vele spelletjes leerden de andere landen elkander al snel kennen.

Van het gastgezin had ik het meeste schrik, maar dit bleek ook voor niets nodig. Mijn gastgezin was zeer gastvrij en vriendelijk en had me zeer goed ontvangen.

Waar ik wel van verschoten was, was dat de economische crisis nog steeds voelbaar was en vele huizen/appartementen te koop stonden. Leven in Portugal was zeker niet gemakkelijk.

Het was een zeer leuke ervaring en ik zou direct terug meegaan!

1) My first document is about guiding teenagers around in Antwerp. I made this together with Emilie Kholopov.

Guiding teenagers around in Antwerp, this is how you do it:

In Antwerp, there are a lot of things to do. For example shopping, sightseeing and going to nightclubs. There are also a lot of cozy restaurants and cafes to spend a pleasant evening. During the summer, there are a lot of festivals and outdoor activities in Antwerp and surroundings like Summer festival, Laundry Day, Tomorrowland, the Ten Miles,… .In a few words: it’s easy to have a good time. We will suggest two walks in the city of Antwerp. One of them is by foot and the second one is on a Segway.

Walk 1 by foot:

A) Koningin Astridplein:

The koningin Astridplein is a square in the centre of Antwerp, the two streets that lead onto this square are the Keyserlei and the Carnotstraat. There are a lot of famous Antwerp buildings on this one square. Such as The Antwerp Zoo, Aquatopia, the Antwerpen-Centraal railway station and the Koningin Elisabethzaal. This is why there are many travellers and families. You have the possibility to stay in one of the hotels around the square.

On your way to the Groenplaats, you walk via the Meir. This is one of the most visited shoppingstreets in Antwerp. The most famous brands are represented, for example Zara, H&M, New Yorker, Forever 21, Mango and many more. Make sure you also enter our local shops. While walking pay attention to the beautiful protected frontages.

B) Groenplaats:

The Groenplaats Square is a square in the Centre of Antwerp.On the square are several trees with benches, it is a ' resting place ' in the city. In the middle of the square stands the statue of Rubens. It is designed in 1840 by Willem Geefs. Just off the square is the Cathedral of our Lady. In addition, there are several cafés with terraces.

City hall:

The Antwerp City Hall is located on the Grote Markt in Antwerp, Belgium. The Town Hall is part of the list of the UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France group registration.

The Town Hall is a renaissance building, designed by the architect Cornelis Floris De Vriendt. It was built between 1561 and 1564. The Town Hall is mostly built in the renaissance build; the middle section does, however, think of the Baroque.

D) MoMu:

The Fashion Museum is sheltered in the ModeNatie in the Nationalestraat. From the very beginning has the MoMu chosen to exhibit collections from different designers or fashion related themes instead of always showing the same. These exhibitions exist of pieces created by the guest designer and pieces that belong to the MoMu collection or are rented. For every single exhibition, the showrooms are decorated differently without ever using static glass cases.

Walk 2 by segway:

A) Frederik Van Eedenplein: This is the starting point of walk 2. It is also the square where the Antwerp Marathon begins. From this point you walk towards the Sint-Annatunnel (white circle on the picture).

B) Het Steen: Het Steen is a medieval fortress in the old city centre of Antwerp. Built after the Viking incursions in the early Middle Ages as the first stone fortress of Antwerp, Het Steen is Antwerp's oldest building and used to be its oldest urban centre. Previously known as Antwerpen Burcht (fortress), Het Steen gained its current name in around 1520, after significant rebuilding under Charles V. The rebuilding led to its being known first as "'s Heeren Steen" (the King's stone castle), and later simply as "Het Steen" (the stone castle). The Dutch word "steen" means "stone", and is used for "fortress" or "palace", as in the "Gravensteen" in Ghent, Belgium. At the entrance bridge to the castle is a statue of a giant and two humans. It depicts the giant Lange Wapper who used to terrorise the inhabitants of the city in medieval times.

C) Mas:

The Mas

The MAS is a ground-breaking museum that tells the story of the people, the past, present and future of the city of Antwerp and the world. It is a landmark on the boundary between the city and the port. It is a museum for those who want to know more about Antwerp’s place, and their own, in the world. The common theme of the expositions involves stories of the river, the city, the port and the world.

A visit to The MoMu can easily be combined with a shoppingday. After all, the Meir is only a few minutes of walking away.

The Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA) conserves about 7600 paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints. Major ensembles by the Flemish Primitives, Peter Paul Rubens and the Baroque, Henri De Braekeleer and the Flemish expressionists characterise the institution. The museum has the most important Ensor collection in the world and the largest collection of works by Rik Wouters.

2) My second document consists of ice breakers

Heads up: This app was created by Ellen DeGeneres, the American tv-host. She plays this game with her guests on the Ellen show to make them feel more comfortable. It’s a guarantee for hilarious moments. You can play Head’s Up with as many as you want. All you need is an electronic devise on which you can download apps. One person has to hold the card, in this case the phone, on his head and has to guess what’s on this card from his friends’ clues before the timer runs out. If he can guess the correct answer, he needs to tilt down the phone. If he didn’t get the answer right before he runs out of time, the phone needs to be tilt up to pass and get a new card. The categories you can choose from are among others silly accents, animals, singing or naming celebrities. There are a few of these for which you need to understand English but there are also categories like the animals that can be understood by everyone.

Get in line: this game is most fun when you can do it with a lot of people. There are different varieties of this game but the main goal is always the same: get in line in the requested order. For example: ask the participants to stand alphabetically so people whose name begins with an A stand on the left side of the line and names beginning with the Z stand on the right side. You can change this game easily by changing the instruction like stand from tall to small or the youngest on the left and the oldest on the right. It’s very important that no one sets a foot outside the line. This way you get to know each other’s names, ages,… in a fun way and not by simply asking it.

Draw yourself: all you need for this game is a pen and a paper. The goal is to find the person drawn on your paper. First thing to do is making sure each person sits apart when they are drawing themselves. When everyone has finished their portrait, you collect them and hand them out again. Now that the participants have received a different drawing, the search can begin for the person on their paper. If this seems too challenging, you can let the drawers write their name underneath their portrait.
